Lionsgate has released a new poster for the 10th anniversary of "La La Land," correcting the pose that Gosling has said "haunted" him since the film's original 2016 artwork was released.
The updated image arrives as "La La Land" prepares to return to theaters starting Aug. 16, when the Oscar-winning musical will screen at Dolby Cinema locations inside AMC Theatres as part of its anniversary re-release. A stage adaptation of the film is also currently in development for Broadway.
The original poster shows Gosling and co-star Emma Stone dancing against the Los Angeles skyline, each with one arm raised. While Stone's hand is extended upward, Gosling's is tilted flat, a choice he has since said he regretted.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal in 2024, Gosling reflected on the pose when asked whether there was a role he would like to revisit. "There's a moment that haunts me where we're dancing, Emma and I," he said, adding that he had not realized at the time that the image would become the film's poster.
He said he had believed both actors were meant to keep their hands raised, but thought putting his hand flat "would be cool." Gosling said that although people around him disagreed, he was convinced his instinct was the right one.
Looking back, Gosling said he now recognizes the choice "killed the energy" of the pose, referring to it as his "La La hand."
"La La Land," directed by Damien Chazelle, follows aspiring actress Mia, played by Stone, and jazz musician Sebastian, played by Gosling, as the two pursue their respective ambitions in Hollywood while navigating a romantic relationship.
The film won six Academy Awards, including best director for Chazelle and best actress for Stone, out of a total of 14 nominations that tied a record for the most nominations received by a single film. It is also remembered for a mix-up during the 2017 Oscars ceremony, when "La La Land" was mistakenly announced as the best picture winner before organizers revealed that "Moonlight" had actually won the award.
Since its release, "La La Land" has remained a frequent reference point in conversations about Gosling's career, alongside more recent projects such as "Barbie" and "Project Hail Mary." The film's soundtrack, including the song "City of Stars," also continued to receive attention in the years following its release.
The anniversary re-release and updated poster mark the latest instance of the decade-old film continuing to draw public attention, as its Broadway adaptation moves forward in parallel.
