"The Walking Dead: Dead City" is set to return for its third season on Sunday, July 26, airing on both AMC and AMC+, marking a new era for the show as longtime enemies Maggie, played by Lauren Cohan, and Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, finally set aside their bitter history.

The new season follows Maggie and Negan as they leave their conflict behind, working together to rebuild Manhattan, even as new dangers threaten their new beginning.

In addition to Cohan and Morgan, season three also stars Jimmi Simpson, Raul Castillo, Aimee Garcia, Logan Kimand Michael Emery.

Cohan, Morgan break down the big shift

Reflecting on how drastically the dynamic between Maggie and Negan evolves in Season 3, the cast and creators highlight a long-awaited turning point for the pair.

''I think that this year, the characters definitely are ready to move on,'' Morgan shared in a recent interview on the series' official YouTube channel. The actor, who has played Negan since his introduction on the original Walking Dead series, said the shift has been a long time coming for both him and co-star Cohan.

He explained that the change brings fresh energy on screen, transforming scenes that were once driven purely by conflict between the two characters.

Cohan echoed that sentiment, reflecting on how far their story has come.

"We have a new vibe this year, completely new tone, new relationship."

Her comment points to a broader shift for the season, one that moves away from the survival and vengeance that once defined Maggie and Negan's dynamic. Instead, the two characters are given room to look back on their history and, for the first time, work toward something shared.
