Hagia Sophia Mosque: A 1,500-year-old world heritage landmark at the heart of Istanbul

Hagia Sophia Mosque stands as one of Istanbul's most visited landmarks, shaped by centuries of history from the Byzantine to the Ottoman era. With its architectural brilliance and layered past, the monument remains a place of worship as well as a symbol of global cultural heritage.

Hagia Sophia was constructed between 532 and 537 by the Byzantine Emperor. Justinian I, originally served as a cathedral. Designed to be the largest church of its time, the structure was intended to reflect the empire's power and devotion, setting new standards in monumental architecture.

The defining element of the Hagia Sophia Mosque is its massive central dome, measuring approximately 31 meters in diameter. Supported by semi-domes and arches, the structure represented a groundbreaking engineering achievement and went on to influence both Byzantine and Ottoman architectural traditions.

Following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror). Minarets, a mihrab, and a minbar were added, adapting the building for Islamic worship while preserving much of its original structure.

In 1935, Hagia Sophia was designated as a museum, opening its doors to visitors from around the world. During this period, it became one of the most recognizable cultural landmarks globally and a major destination for international tourism.

After 1453, Sultan Mehmed II converted Hagia Sophia into a mosque. Minarets, a mihrab, and a minbar were added, while many Byzantine mosaics were carefully preserved under coverings. In 2020, it officially reopened for prayers, remaining accessible to visitors outside worship hours, continuing its role as a living monument of history and faith.
