Istanbul Concept Gallery is hosting “Hesperides,” the first joint exhibition by Su Alara Acerol and Deniz Defne Acerol, bringing together two independent artistic practices through a shared mythological metaphor.
The exhibition does not retell a myth directly. Instead, it uses the idea of Hesperides, known in Greek mythology as the garden where golden apples were protected, as a way to open up a broader reflection on what people consider worth preserving.
Curated by Isik Gencoglu, the selection focuses on the intellectual connection that emerges when two different painting practices are placed side by side.
Rather than presenting mythology as a closed story, the exhibition turns the image of the protected garden into a common space for thought. Through this framework, visitors are invited to consider the central question behind the show: “What is your golden apple?”
Su Alara Acerol brings an academic background shaped by archaeology and art history into her artistic practice. She completed her studies at Bilkent University and Koc University on full scholarships and also took part in several rescue excavations, a term used for archaeological work carried out to protect heritage before it is damaged or lost.
Deniz Defne Acerol, who graduated from the Painting Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2013, works with storytelling, imagined spaces and mythological imagery, carrying these elements into the present through her visual language.
Made up of works produced with different techniques, “Hesperides” brings the two artists’ approaches together without merging them into a single style. The exhibition will remain open to visitors at Istanbul Concept Gallery until Aug. 8.
