What happens when history, culture, and sustainability collide? Students from Ataturk University took old, forgotten jackets and transformed them into wearable art that tells Erzurum’s story.

From majestic landmarks and heroic women to hidden natural wonders, each stitch celebrates the city’s heritage while giving new life to what was once discarded.

The students drew inspiration from Erzurum’s rich architectural heritage, incorporating motifs from landmarks like Uc Kumbetler, Cifte Minareli Medrese, and Yakutiye Medrese.

Every stitch on these jackets is a tribute to the city’s past, merging history and modern fashion in a way that celebrates local pride.

Some designs honor Erzurum’s legendary figures, including Nene Hatun, a hero of the 1877-78 Ottoman-Russian war. Others capture the poignant story of the “Huma Kusu” folk song, depicting longing, love, and hope.

Inspired by the “Huma Kusu” folk song, student Sedanur Karaca’s design portrays a woman waiting for her soldier husband to return from war.

A clock motif illustrates the weight of passing time, while the symbolic bird embodies hope and resilience, turning a jacket into a deeply emotional story.

This project transforms discarded jackets into long-lasting fashion statements. By cleaning, redesigning, and embroidering them with care, students demonstrate how creativity can combat waste, turning environmental awareness into tangible, beautiful pieces.

After three months of dedication, 20 students created 50 jackets for the ‘From Old to New’ exhibition at Yakutiye Medrese.

Through each jacket, Erzurum’s landmarks, tales, and natural beauty come alive, letting you see and feel the city in a whole new way.
