A social media post by Gorkem Sevindik, known for his role as “Kadir Baba” in the popular Kanal D series "Esref Ruya," has drawn a sharp response from Israeli officials and triggered a wave of online reactions across multiple countries.
The controversy began after Sevindik shared a message expressing concern over Palestinian prisoners, referencing claims that thousands face execution, including children. Urging people not to remain silent, he called on the public to speak out against what he described as injustice. His remarks quickly gained traction, particularly given the international reach of the series in which he stars.
The reaction escalated when Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s far-right national security minister, publicly responded with a video message targeting Sevindik directly. In his statement, Ben-Gvir dismissed the actor’s stance and emphasized Israel’s position on capital punishment for individuals it labels as terrorists.
Following the minister’s remarks, pro-Israel social media users reportedly directed threats toward the actor and called for a boycott of the TV series.
At the same time, many Turkish social media users rallied behind Sevindik, voicing support and amplifying his message.
Speaking to CNN Turk, Sevindik explained that his reaction stemmed from a video he encountered online showing detainees saying goodbye to their children. He said he responded as both a father and an individual guided by conscience, indicating that he felt compelled to speak out against what he perceived as suffering.
He reiterated that his stance was rooted in opposition to violence and injustice in general, rather than directed at any specific group. While acknowledging that his comments may have disappointed some viewers abroad, he maintained that his response reflected a basic human reaction.
