Istanbul has once again positioned itself as a leading destination for contemporary art, as the sixth edition of the ArtContact Istanbul International Contemporary Art Fair opened its doors to visitors at the Dr Mimar Kadir Topbas Gosteri ve Sanat Merkezi.

Organized by ATIS Fuarcilik, the fair brings together more than 1,000 artists from approximately 40 countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Armenia, Lebanon, China, Azerbaijan, Spain, Egypt and France.

Around 100 participating galleries and institutions are represented across the four-day event, which runs through May 17.

The fair showcases a wide variety of contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, printmaking, and interdisciplinary production, offering visitors a broad view of modern art's evolving forms of expression.

Alongside exhibitions, the program includes panels, workshops, and special events designed to facilitate connections among galleries, collectors, and art professionals from Europe and beyond.

A platform for emerging artists and global partnerships

The board chair of ATIS Fuarcilik Bilgin Aygul described the fair as a platform that creates space for young artists and new projects, while also prioritizing public art initiatives and international collaborations.

He noted that the fair had taken on an international character from its third edition onward, expressing ambitions to expand the event into a full art festival in the future.

Aygul added that the organization had previously established ArtAnkara before bringing the fair to Istanbul, framing the two events as part of a broader effort to strengthen the domestic and international art market.

Istanbul's cultural weight on display

The fair's opening ceremony drew representatives from Istanbul's municipal institutions, who noted the event's role in reinforcing the city's standing as a cultural center.

Kadikoy Mayor Mesut Kosedagi characterized Istanbul as a capital of culture and art, pointing to the fair as evidence of that status.

He noted that the diversity of the works on display reflected the breadth of artistic expression represented at the event.

Awards recognize contributions to contemporary art

The opening ceremony included the presentation of the annual Honor Awards. Painter Ertugrul Ates received the Artist Honor Award, while Istanbul Modern received the Institutional Honor Award.

The Bozlu Art Project received the Contribution to Art Honor Award, accepted on behalf of the organization by Bozlu Holding's board chair, Dr Sukru Bozluolcay.

Ates said the fair makes a meaningful contribution to Istanbul's cultural life, and expressed gratitude to those who selected him for the award.

Bozluolcay noted that Bozlu Art was established approximately 13 years ago and described the recognition as significant motivation to continue the organization's work in the art world.

Yasemin Sumer, who serves as the operations director of Istanbul Museum of ModernArt, accepted the Institutional Honor Award on behalf of the museum, stating that the recognition was for all artists and institutions who have contributed to contemporary art.

Connecting collectors, galleries and artists

Now in its sixth year, ArtContact Istanbul continues to draw a large number of participants. It offers galleries from Europe and other regions access to new market opportunities, international networks and greater visibility within the global art world.

The fair provides a setting for direct engagement between collectors, artists and art enthusiasts. The organizers say the event's reach and content continue to grow year on year.

The fair remains open to visitors through May 17.
