Istanbul is set to host a wide range of cultural events this week, with programs spanning theater, concerts, museum performances, exhibitions and children's workshops across the city.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) City Theaters present "The Bandits" (”Haramiler”) as part of the Open-Air Summer Plays program, opening tomorrow at Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Stage. Written by Musahipzade Celal and adapted and directed by Engin Alkan, the musical begins at 21:00.
"The Play That Goes Wrong" (Yoldan Cikan Oyun), written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields and directed by Lerzan Pamir, runs Aug. 27-28 at the same venue.
Jazz fans can catch a run of performances at Nardis Jazz Club through the week. Baris Ozturk Trio performs today, Nanny Assis presents his "AfroJobim" project tomorrow, Renan Teuman Quartet takes the stage Aug. 26, and Melisa Durukan and Ilayda Hatipoglu Quintet close out the run Aug. 27.
The Zorlu Performing Arts Center's Vestel Amfi hosts the "VIBE Concert" ("VIBE Konseri") on Aug. 26. Led by Basak Dogan, the a cappella group VIBE performs arrangements of songs by Jamiroquai, Daft Punk, Pentatonix, Adele, Aurora, Stevie Wonder and Coldplay. The concert is free to attend.
Open-air concerts also continue at Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theater through the week.
As part of the Turk Telekom Prime Ataturk Cultural Center (AKM) Summer Concerts, One Two Trio performs Aug. 26 at the AKM Multi-Purpose Hall. The young jazz trio—pianist Saim Mert Saricali, bassist Gunes Sungur and drummer Hursit Efe Koroglu—blends original compositions with jazz standards and improvisation.
Funikuler takes the same stage Aug. 29. The group, made up of Doga Toparlak, Ozgu Dundar, Ozan Guler, Yunus Emre Hacioglu and Abdullah Ors, presents a progressive sound that combines jazz's structural freedom with Anatolian makams, Latin rhythms and Eastern melodies.
"Stage at the Museum" (Muzede Sahne) opens Aug. 27, as the Sakip Sabanci Museum marks the 10th edition of the program. Supported by the Sabanci Foundation, the event runs Aug. 27-30. Built around the theme "Transformation Through Plays" (Oyunlarla Donusum), it brings different forms of theater and performance to audiences.
The lineup includes "Encounters in the Foyer" (Fuayede Karsilasmalar) on Aug. 27, 28, 29 and 30, "Loss of Recent Times" (Yakin Zamanin Kaybi) on Aug. 29 and 30, and "The Carp Council: In Pursuit of Strange Relatives" (Sazan Meclisi: Tuhaf Akrabalarin Izinde) on Aug. 28.
The Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum opens "Colors of Fire" (Atesin Renkleri) today, a tile exhibition by artist Mumine Ates and her students.
At Istanbul Modern, visitors can see "Panorama: Dreams and Places" (Panorama: Hayaller ve Yerler), "Semiha Berksoy: Aria of All Colors" (Semiha Berksoy: Tum Renklerin Aryasi) and "Renzo Piano: Spirit of the Place" (Renzo Piano: Yerin Ruhu).
The Sakip Sabanci Museum is showing Japanese artist Yoko Ono's exhibition "Inner Voice, Inner Structure" (Icses ve Icyapi) through Dec. 27. The museum also hosts its "Scribbles, Calligraphy Exercises" (Karalamalar, Meskler) exhibition and a display from its permanent painting collection.
Collector Mehmet Cebi's "Silent Elegance" (Sessiz Zarafet) exhibition, featuring contemporary calligraphy, hilye and prayer beads, remains on view at Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center through Aug. 29.
Children's activities continue throughout the week at the Ataturk Cultural Center, including "Designing the Future with Lego and Drawing" (Lego ve Resimle Gelecegi Tasarliyorum), "My Dream Play/Creative Drama" (Hayal Oyunum/Yaratici Drama), a Chacha dance workshop (Caca dans atolyesi) for different age groups, and a little yogis/yoga workshop beginning tomorrow.
Stand-up shows, open-air events, sema ceremonies and additional workshops are also taking place at various venues across Istanbul throughout the week.
