Lucasfilm has hired Jon Watts to direct the first film in a new Skywalker Saga trilogy, Deadline reports.
Watts directed "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "Spider-Man: Far From Home," and "Spider-Man: No Way Home," and is also a co-creator of the series "Skeleton Crew."
The screenplay for the new trilogy is being written by Simon Kinberg, known for "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" and Prime Video's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."
Kinberg, also a co-creator of the Disney XD animated series "Star Wars Rebels," has reportedly been working on the project since 2018.
The new films will form the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga. Daisy Ridley is reportedly set to return as Rey. The project has not yet received official production approval from Disney.
The Skywalker Saga began with "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope," released in 1977, and continued with "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi."
The series then returned to earlier events with a prequel trilogy starting in 1999: "The Phantom Menace," "Attack of the Clones," and "Revenge of the Sith."
The most recent trilogy in the Skywalker Saga began with "The Force Awakens" in 2015. Centered on Ridley's character Rey, the story continued with "The Last Jedi" and concluded with "The Rise of Skywalker" in 2019.
Since 2019, the "Star Wars" universe has continued to expand through films and streaming series set in different eras. The franchise's next theatrical release, "Star Wars: Starfighter," is scheduled for May 28, 2027.
