The cast of "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" has been officially confirmed, with new and returning actors set to bring a prequel story set in Middle-earth to the screen.
The upcoming film will be directed by and star Andy Serkis, who is set to take on a central role in the project. According to announcements made during CinemaCon, the character of Aragorn, originally portrayed by Viggo Mortensen in the earlier trilogy, will now be played by Jamie Dornan.
The story is set before the events of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," following a timeline in which key characters set out in search of Gollum. For international audiences, this places the narrative within the broader Middle-earth chronology prior to the formation of the Fellowship.
Alongside the casting shift for "Aragorn," the film will introduce new characters while also bringing back familiar figures from the original series. Kate Winslet has joined the cast as Marigol, while Leo Woodall will appear as Halvard.
At the same time, several original cast members are set to return, reinforcing continuity within the franchise. Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, Elijah Wood will return as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace will once again portray Thranduil.
The screenplay has been written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, while Peter Jackson is attached as producer.
Produced by Warner Bros., the film is positioned as the first in a new series of live-action projects set in the Middle-earth universe. It is scheduled to be released in Türkiye on Dec. 17, 2027, distributed by TME Films.
