''Wonder Man'' has been canceled at Disney+, despite a previously announced season 2 renewal.
The renewal came in March, roughly two months after the show's debut, making the reversal all the more unexpected.
According to Variety, a writers' room for season 2 was never opened, and the show's writers have since been released to pursue other projects.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who plays the title character Simon Williams, expressed gratitude via Instagram.
''That's life, right? Everything will shake out,'' he went on to thank fans who watched, enjoyed and shared the show, adding that he's "glad we got to be a part of something cool."
His remarks come weeks after he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in the show.
The first season of ''Wonder Man'' debuted strongly on Disney+. According to viewership data, the show pulled in 618 million minutes viewed during its opening week in late January
''Wonder Man'' was developed by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, with Cretton directing the opening two episodes and Guest overseeing the series as showrunner.
The first season also featured X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Buric, Arian Moayed, Josh Gad and Olivia Thirlby in supporting roles.
Marvel's live-action Disney+ shows rarely get past their first season; those include shows like ''WandaVision,'' ''The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,'' ''Hawkeye,'' and ''Moon Knight.''
Other Marvel series that have followed the same one-and-done path include, "Ms. Marvel," "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law," "Secret Invasion," "Echo," "Agatha All Along," and "Ironheart."
Only "Loki" and "Daredevil: Born Again" have gone on to a second season among live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series.
