The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the Oscars will leave Hollywood following the centennial edition of the ceremony in 2028. Beginning with the 101st Academy Awards in 2029, the event will be held at the Peacock Theater within the L.A. LIVE complex in downtown Los Angeles.

End of an era at Dolby Theatre

The 10-year agreement with AEG, owners of the venue, marks the end of the ceremony’s long-standing association with the Dolby Theatre on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which has hosted the Oscars since 2002. The Dolby Theatre is located near the Roosevelt Hotel, site of the very first Oscars ceremony in 1929.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a joint statement:
"For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make L.A. LIVE the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema, both for our live audience and for film fans around the world."

The move coincides with a major broadcast shift, as the Oscars will leave U.S. network television and be streamed globally on YouTube starting in 2029. Hollywood has not always been the permanent home of the Academy Awards.

In the 1960s, the ceremony was hosted in Santa Monica, and over the years, various venues across downtown Los Angeles have served as locations for the event.
