'Other Mommy’ leads box office at $28M as Sorkin film lags

Universal Pictures’ horror film “Other Mommy” is heading to an estimated $28 million in its North American opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sony Pictures’ “The Social Reckoning” is on track for about $6 million.

“Other Mommy” opened in 3,200 North American theaters and grossed $12.6 million on Friday, including Thursday previews. Universal had projected a $20 million opening for the film, which has a $19 million budget. Directed by Rob Savage, it stars Jessica Chastain as a sinister entity that appears in a young girl’s closet.

Audiences gave the film a D+ CinemaScore, the lowest grade since “Megalopolis” in September 2024. “Other Mommy” holds a 19% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 46% audience score.

Sorkin film below studio estimate

“The Social Reckoning” opened in 2,606 North American locations and earned $2.1 million on Friday, including Thursday previews. Sony had estimated about $7 million for the weekend. The fact-based thriller has a $30 million budget.

Directed by Aaron Sorkin, the film stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong. It follows a Facebook staffer, played by Madison, who works with a journalist, played by White, to expose troubling information about the company. Strong plays an older Mark Zuckerberg.

Sorkin won an Academy Award for the screenplay of “The Social Network” (2010) and replaces David Fincher as director of the companion film.

“The Social Network” starred Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg, opened at No. 1 with $22.4 million in October 2010 and earned $224 million worldwide. It holds a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score. “The Social Reckoning” holds a 54% approval rating from critics and a 71% audience rating.

Holdovers

Amazon MGM Studios’ “Verity” is expected to take second place with about $14.2 million, a decline of roughly 56% from its opening weekend. Its domestic total stands at an estimated $56.5 million.

Directed by Michael Showalter, the Colleen Hoover adaptation stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett in a thriller about a woman who takes a ghostwriting job.

Sony’s “Resident Evil” is projected to earn $8.2 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to roughly $138.3 million. Austin Abrams stars in Zach Cregger’s reboot of the video game franchise.

Paramount’s “Heart of the Beast” is expected to add $6.7 million in its third weekend, for a domestic total of $49.3 million. The David Ayer thriller stars Brad Pitt as a Special Forces officer who navigates the wilderness with his combat dog.
