The acclaimed Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri has been selected as one of the distinguished guests of the upcoming Bosphorus Film Festival in Istanbul, scheduled to take place from Nov. 7 to 14.
On the second day of the festival, Nov. 8, Bakri will hold a workshop titled “The Art of Presence with Saleh Bakri,” during which he will share his insights and experiences with cinema enthusiasts on building emotion on stage and approaching character development in a deeply reflective manner.
The festival is organized by the Bosphorus Culture and Arts Foundation in Istanbul, with Anadolu Agency (AA) participating as a media partner.
Saleh has become one of the most recognizable faces across Palestinian, Arab, and European cinema, and not just because of his pensive blue eyes and dark, now graying curls, but also because his extensive filmography underscores a distinguished ability to portray complex characters with refined nuance, emotional depth, and a compelling, understated presence.
Alongside his Palestinian works, Bakri has also appeared in Lebanese, Moroccan, and Italian films.
Among the most notable is the Moroccan film The Blue Caftan, which made the shortlist for Best International Feature Film at the 2023 Academy Awards.
In his latest work, Bakri reunites with director Farah Nabulsi in The Teacher. The film follows their acclaimed collaboration on her BAFTA-winning 2020 short The Present.
Here again, Bakri delivers a performance that highlights his standing in contemporary cinema. The Teacher is an emotional, politically charged social drama.
It portrays the struggle of life under Israeli occupation through Basem—a solitary English teacher—and the student he tries to protect from further tragedy at the hands of Israeli settlers.
