Istanbul Modern Cinema, in collaboration with the Embassy of Portugal and Othon Cinema, is set to host a comprehensive retrospective dedicated to acclaimed Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa. Running from Oct. 16 to 26 under the title "All About Pedro Costa," the program will bring together all of Costa’s short and feature-length works for audiences in Türkiye.
In a statement released by Istanbul Modern, the museum’s Film Curator Muge Turan said the team was pleased to include Costa in their series of retrospectives, describing him as “one of the most important and radical auteurs of contemporary cinema.”
Turan highlighted Costa’s distinctive approach, quoting The Guardian, which once referred to him as “the Samuel Beckett of cinema.” She explained that “in his films, time slows down and the boundaries between reality and fiction dissolve,” emphasizing that Costa’s aesthetics invite audiences not only to watch but to experience cinema.
The program will screen Costa’s major works, including "Vitalina Varela," "Horse Money," "In Vanda’s Room, Bones," "Colossal Youth," "Where Does Your Hidden Smile Lie?," "Casa de Lava, Blood" and "Down to Earth."
These films, celebrated at international festivals for their meditative pace and deep engagement with marginal communities, have positioned Costa as a defining voice in contemporary European cinema.
With this retrospective, Istanbul Modern continues its commitment to showcasing world cinema and fostering cultural exchange through film. Visitors can find more information about screening times and tickets at Istanbul Modern's website.
