President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the “Magnificent Pocket Watch Collection” exhibition in Istanbul, where a curated selection of rare timepieces dating from the 16th century to the early 20th century is on display.
The exhibition, titled “Magnificent Pocket Watch Collection,” brings together rare pocket watches assembled by collector Mehmet Cebi. The collection covers a wide historical range, offering visitors a glimpse into the evolution of portable timekeeping devices from early modern periods through the late Ottoman era and into the early 1900s.
Pocket watches, widely used before wristwatches became common in the 20th century, were both functional objects and symbols of status, often reflecting advances in craftsmanship and design over time.
Erdogan toured the exhibition at the Tophane-i Amire Culture and Arts Center, a cultural venue affiliated with Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSGSU) in Istanbul. During the visit, he received information about the collection directly from Mehmet Cebi, who curated the display.
The exhibition is open to the public and has been attracting art and history enthusiasts interested in decorative arts and horology, the study and measurement of time.
The president was accompanied by several senior officials and public figures throughout the visit. Among them were Communications Director Burhanettin Duran, AK Party Deputy Chairman and Party Spokesperson Omer Celik, and Chief Advisor on Foreign Policy and Security Ambassador Akif Cagatay Kilic.
Also present were Professor Erhan Afyoncu, Rector of the National Defense University, and historian and writer Murat Bardakci, both of whom joined the tour of the exhibition.
