The Black Sea town of Tunca in Ardesen, Rize, will host the 15th edition of the Red Bull Formulaz wooden car festival on August 24, bringing with it a newly built race track that will be open year-round.
Mayor Ramazan Topcu announced that a new one-kilometer track has been completed for the event. He explained that the venue would not only serve the annual competition but also welcome locals and visitors throughout the year. “The new track will now be a permanent venue. People will not only come to watch but will compete themselves with their families, neighbors, and friends,” he said.
Topcu underlined that Formulaz has become one of the most important events in the Black Sea region, adding that the new facility would contribute to tourism in Rize.
Formulaz features “tahta araba” (wooden car) races, in which participants race downhill in gravity-powered, non-motorised wooden cars. According to Murat Gul, head of the Formulaz Association, the event, which started 15 years ago, has now reached an international scale.
“One of our goals was a high-security track in a traffic-free area, so that Formulaz would not be a one-day event but an everyday activity. With the support of DOKAP and the municipality, we have now achieved this,” he said, noting that the new circuit will also allow spectators to follow the action from three different points.
