Vincent Pastore, a veteran actor known for playing mobsters and tough guys, most notably Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero on "The Sopranos," has died at age 80.
Bob McGowan, who managed Pastore since his run on "The Sopranos," told The Associated Press (AP) that he learned of the actor's death on Saturday from fellow cast member Vincent Curatola.
McGowan said Pastore was found at his home on New York City's island after not being heard from for several days.
McGowan added that he had been trying to reach Pastore about a potential job opportunity.
"He was the most loyal client, and he always gave to charity," McGowan said, describing him as someone who would help anybody, a trait he called rare in his industry.
Robert Attermann, who represented Pastore for more than 30 years before his role on "The Sopranos," said in an email that while Pastore would be remembered as "Big Pussy," he was much more than the character.
He described Pastore as one of the kindest and most generous people he had known, noting that Pastore always treated fans warmly and never turned down a photo or autograph request.
Attermann added that Pastore was passionate about acting and regularly took time to mentor younger actors, offering guidance and support whenever he could.
Michael Imperioli, a longtime friend and collaborator, wrote on Instagram that it felt as though he had known Pastore forever. He recalled working and traveling together across the United States, as well as in Italy and Australia, describing Pastore as a kind-hearted friend who cared deeply about his loved ones and saying he would miss him always.
Pastore's film career dated back to the 1980s, with roles in major films including "Goodfellas" and "Awakenings," both released in 1990. He frequently played gangster roles, and it was one such role that defined his career: a 30-episode run as Bonpensiero, Tony Soprano's friend who later becomes an FBI informant.
Pastore was born in the Bronx and raised in suburban New Rochelle, New York. He enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War and later attended Pace University, according to his IMDb biography.
He is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore.
