"Spider-Man: Brand New Day," starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, opened to $168 million domestically on Friday from 4,487 North American screens, including Thursday previews, according to Sony Pictures.
The figure marks the highest single-day domestic total on record, surpassing the $156.7 million Friday earned by "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019.
Thursday preview screenings brought in $72 million, also a record, exceeding the previous mark of $60 million set by "Endgame."
Sony is projecting a $325 million domestic opening weekend for the film, which would rank as the second-highest domestic launch of all time. Some industry estimates suggest the film's domestic debut could surpass Endgame's $357.1 million opening, which went on to earn $1.2 billion globally in 2019.
The projected total would also displace Spider-Man: No Way Home from the No. 2 spot for all-time North American openings.
That film, the most recent prior installment featuring Holland's Spider-Man, opened to $260.1 million domestically and $587.2 million worldwide in December 2021, finishing with a $1.9 billion global total, the eighth-highest of all time.
Sony's original projections for Brand New Day had placed the domestic opening at $195 million and the global total at $465 million. The film carries a production budget of $225 million.
"Brand New Day" is produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose previous credits include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The cast includes Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo. The film follows Marvel Comics' hero as he navigates a solitary life without his loved ones before being pursued by an unseen enemy.
The film received an A CinemaScore from opening-day audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 90% approval rating from critics and a 98% audience score.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is Gregg Araki's "I Want Your Sex," starring Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman.
Magnolia Pictures released the film in 700 North American theaters after acquiring it following its Sundance premiere. The film is projected to open in eighth place with roughly $675,000.
Universal's "The Odyssey," directed by Christopher Nolan, dropped to second place with an estimated $51 million, bringing its domestic total to $395 million. The film had held the top spot for the two previous weekends.
Pixar's "Toy Story 5" is projected to earn $6.2 million, raising its domestic total to $461 million. Illumination's Minions & Monsters is expected to bring in $5.6 million for a domestic tally of $168 million. Disney's live-action Moana, starring Dwayne Johnson, rounds out the top five with an estimated $5.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $114 million.
