Aaron Sorkin’s "The Social Reckoning" opened to $5.5 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend, a muted start for the long-awaited follow-up to "The Social Network."
The Sony Pictures release, in 2,606 theaters, finished fifth, behind several holdovers. It also came in under projections, which had ranged from about $6 million to as much as $8 million.
Universal's horror film "Other Mommy" took the top spot with an estimated $27.5 million, despite poor reviews.
"The Social Reckoning" dramatizes the 2021 Facebook leak by whistleblower Frances Haugen and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz.
Sorkin wrote and directed it. The cast includes Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong, who was part of the "Social Network" cast.
The opening trails the roughly $22 million that "The Social Network" took in during its 2010 debut. That film went on to gross about $225 million worldwide and won Sorkin an Oscar for best adapted screenplay.
The film holds a 54% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, compared with 71% from audiences.
The film, a co-production with Alcon Entertainment, cost about $30 million to make, less than the roughly $40 million reported for the original. That lowers the financial risk for Sony, which has had a strong year thanks to "Spider-Man: Brand New Day."
