''South Park'' co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have publicly apologized for the repeated delays to their long-in-the-works film with Kendrick Lamar, currently known under the working title "Whitney Springs."
The musical comedy is in production at Paramount, with Parker and Stone producing under their Park County banner and Lamar producing alongside Dave Free through pgLang.
''We take full responsibility for the schedule delay of this movie,'' Parker and Stone said in a statement to The Ankler.
''We apologize to our partners at pgLang and Paramount, and we appreciate their patience. 'South Park' and life's circumstances have gotten in the way, but we still believe in the project.''
The project, known internally as "Whitney Springs," is being produced at Paramount, the same studio behind "South Park."
Initial plot descriptions described "Whitney Springs" as centering on a Black man employed as a slave reenactor at a living history museum, who learns that his white girlfriend's family once enslaved his ancestors.
The Ankler's account of the premise differs slightly from this.
According to the outlet, the story instead has the Black reenactor butting heads with a bigoted Midwestern mayor, a role set to be played by Parker. The Ankler also reported that Lamar has laid down several original tracks for the film.
Parker and Stone are set to premiere Season 29 of ''South Park'' on Sept. 16.
The pair also recently revealed a name change for the show, taking a jab at Donald Trump by pointing to the "patriotism" of companies like Apple and Google as their inspiration for rebranding it "South America."
They added a pointed thanks to parent company Paramount, referring to it as a "Skydance Capitulation."
