"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" continued its dominant box office run, earning another $145 million domestically in its second weekend, the third-biggest sophomore outing of all time behind only 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($149 million) and 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" ($147 million), according to an article by Variety.com.

After a record-setting $355 million domestic opening and $932 million globally, Sony and Marvel's film, starring Tom Holland, has now generated $655 million in North America and $1.67 billion worldwide, crossing $1 billion in just six days.

Industry watchers are now wondering whether the film could become the first movie to reach $1 billion domestically and the first to hit $3 billion globally. "The Force Awakens" currently holds the domestic record at $936.6 million, while "Avatar" ($2.9 billion) and "Avengers: Endgame" ($2.7 billion) remain the top global earners.

Nolan's epic becomes his biggest ever

In second place, Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" earned $31.5 million in its fourth weekend, a 38% drop. With $461 million domestically and $1.1 billion worldwide, it has become Nolan's highest-grossing film ever, surpassing "The Dark Knight Rises" ($1.08 billion).

The film has also become IMAX's highest-grossing release of all time, with $289 million from IMAX screens alone, and has yet to open in China.

New releases struggle to compete

Three new wide releases underperformed. Universal's romantic comedy "One Night Only," starring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, opened to $5.7 million. "Super Troopers 3" launched with $4 million, the franchise's lowest debut. Eli Roth's self-distributed slasher "Ice Cream Man" earned $2 million.

Several limited releases fared better on a per-screen basis. A24's Anthony Bourdain biopic "Tony" earned $348,955 from six screens, among the year's best averages.

Mubi's "Teenage Sex and Death and Camp Miasma," from director Jane Schoenbrun, brought in $251,000 from five screens, while Magnolia's "Late Fame," starring Willem Dafoe, earned $38,000 from two screens.
