"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" opened to $130.9 million in North American ticket sales in its debut weekend, industry estimates showed Sunday, securing the biggest worldwide launch of the year with $372.5 million globally.
The animated sequel, produced by Universal and Illumination Studios, follows Mario, Luigi, and their companions on a space mission to rescue Princess Rosalina.
The film features the voices of Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Brie Larson.
It was produced on a $110 million budget.
The film's $372.5 million global opening, including $182.4 million from 80 overseas markets, ranks as Hollywood's fourth-biggest animated debut ever, behind "Zootopia 2," "Moana 2" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."
It is also Universal's fifth-biggest worldwide launch.
According to Universal, "Super Mario" is the only animated franchise to have two titles open to over $350 million globally.
The result closely mirrors the first installment's performance: 2023's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" opened to $171 million internationally and $375 million worldwide, then went on to gross $1.3 billion globally.
Top international markets for the opening weekend included Mexico ($29 million), the United Kingdom and Ireland ($19.7 million), Germany ($15 million), and France ($12 million).
In Imax, the film earned $22.2 million globally, ranking as the company's second-best global opening for a Hollywood release, above the $21.4 million Imax debut of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."
"Project Hail Mary," the Amazon MGM space adventure starring Ryan Gosling as a teacher-turned-astronaut on a mission to save Earth, slipped to second place in its third weekend with $30.7 million in North America and $42.1 million from 86 overseas markets.
The film has now earned $420.7 million worldwide, marking the first major commercial success for Amazon MGM. In IMAX, it has accumulated $73.6 million to date.
Debuting in third place was "The Drama," a romantic comedy from A24 starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, which earned $14.4 million in its opening weekend.
Disney/Pixar's "Hoppers" placed fourth with $5.8 million.
Universal's romance adaptation "Reminders of Him," based on a Colleen Hoover novel and starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers, earned $2.2 million in fifth place.
