The reconstruction of the mosque took place as part of a broader effort to encourage settlement in the Nisantasi area.

The mosque itself gave its name to Tesvikiye, which translates as “encouragement,” reflecting this policy of promoting urban development.

Architecturally, the mosque reflects the late Ottoman adoption of Baroque elements, a European style characterized by elaborate decoration.

While the structure follows a single-domed plan typical of Ottoman mosques, its facade stands out with decorative details influenced by Western motifs.

Inside, large windows allow natural light to fill the prayer hall, creating a bright and open atmosphere.

The presence of the imperial pavilion, known as the “hunkar kasri,” and its associated section further adds to the architectural complexity of the structure.

Academic Kubilay Arpaci explained that the area was once used by Ottoman sultans for shooting practice, with target stones still present.

He noted that “Sultan Abdulmecid wanted a neighborhood to be established here” and had the mosque built quickly to serve as its focal point.

The mosque’s two slender minarets complement its silhouette, adding a sense of balance and elegance.

Although the overall mass of the building appears relatively simple, its exterior ornamentation draws attention and highlights the fusion of styles.

Today, the Tesvikiye Mosque is regarded not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of Nisantasi’s urban development.

Its architectural features and location position it among Istanbul’s notable historical structures, reflecting the Ottoman Empire’s modernization period.
