A Turkish artillery corporal credited with helping force a French submarine to surrender during the World War I Gallipoli campaign is the subject of a new feature film made with the help of artificial intelligence, its makers said.

"Tek Kisilik Ordu Mustecip Onbasi" (One-Man Army Corporal Mustecip) is scheduled for release in March 2027, timed to the anniversary of the Ottoman victory at Canakkale.

Credited with the capture

According to screenwriter Faruk Anbarcioglu, a former lawmaker and head of the Bursa branch of the Turkish Parliamentarians Union, Mustecip fired on the submarine Turquoise from the Gallipoli Peninsula on Oct. 30, 1915.

The shots led to the vessel’s capture. Mustecip received a promotion and a gold watch from the Ottoman war minister, Enver Pasha, Anbarcioglu said.

A veteran of 2 wars

Born in 1891 in a village near Bursa, Mustecip served about nine years, including in the Turkish War of Independence. He died in 1959. Anbarcioglu said the corporal once declined a government loan offered to veterans, saying he was poor but so was the state.

"Unfortunately, our children grow up with films and cartoons about the imaginary heroes of the West," Anbarcioglu said. "He is not a figment of imagination, but a real hero."

Anbarcioglu adapted the script from his 2022 book and is producing the roughly 110-minute film with director Oguzhan Ural.

The filmmakers did not say how AI would be used.

Mustecip’s granddaughter, Hatice Kocaturk, 74, said the family was delighted. "Türkiye will get to know and see my grandfather," she said.
