Popular Turkish television dramas have played a growing role in strengthening cultural, diplomatic and economic ties between Türkiye and Bangladesh over the past decade, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Ankara said.
Amanul Haq told Turkish news agency Anadolu that Turkish series have created strong emotional and cultural connections between the two countries.
“Turkish television dramas have become an important bond between Bangladesh and Türkiye over the past decade,” Haq said. “These series strengthen emotional ties, cultural interest and mutual respect.”
Haq said Bangladeshi audiences closely relate to themes commonly portrayed in Turkish dramas, including family bonds, faith, honor, justice and sacrifice, which he said reflect similar social and cultural values in Bangladesh.
Turkish productions such as Kara Sevda, Muhtesem Yuzyil (The Magnificent Century), known locally as Sultan Suleiman, and Kurulus Osman are among the most popular series in Bangladesh, particularly among younger viewers.
He noted that local broadcasters, especially Deepto TV, have played a key role in expanding the audience by airing Bengali-dubbed versions of the shows.
The ambassador said the impact of Turkish dramas extends well beyond television screens.
Interest in Turkish cuisine, fashion and language has grown steadily, while travel interest in Türkiye has also increased, he said. Turkish restaurants are becoming more common in Dhaka, and Turkish-made products are increasingly used by middle-class households.
“Turkish dramas have clearly contributed to the spread of Turkish restaurants, clothing and a strong attraction to visit Türkiye,” Haq said.
Haq said the growing cultural familiarity has helped reinforce political, diplomatic and trade relations between the two countries.
He noted that Bangladesh has proposed opening a Yunus Emre Institute branch in the country due to strong public interest in the Turkish language and culture.
According to Haq, the dramas portray Türkiye as a country with a rich Islamic heritage, effective governance and modern capabilities, enhancing its soft power in Bangladesh while encouraging deeper people-to-people ties.
