Palestine has selected the TRT, Türkiye’s public broadcaster, co-production "Palestine 36" as its official entry to the 98th Academy Awards, known internationally as the Oscars.

The feature is directed by award-winning filmmaker Annemarie Jacir and produced by Palestinian producer Osama Bawardi.

Toronto world premiere precedes awards campaign

The film will make its world premiere in the Gala Presentations section of the Toronto Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 4 to 14. Positioning the title on a high-profile North American platform sets the tone for its awards journey.

Story rooted in 1936 and nationwide revolt

Set in 1936, the drama follows Yusuf as he moves between his rural home and Jerusalem while unrest builds across the country. As the number of Jewish immigrants arriving from Europe rises, Palestinians unite in what is described as the largest and longest uprising against three decades of British rule. All sides, the synopsis suggests, are drawn toward an inevitable confrontation seen as decisive for the future of the British Empire and the wider region.

Director with history of representing Palestine at Oscars

The announcement noted that Jacir’s "Wajib" (The Wedding Invitation), "When I Saw You," and "Salt of This Sea" were previously chosen as Palestine’s Oscar submissions, underlining her sustained presence in the country’s awards representation.

The cast features Hiam Abbass, Kamel al-Basha, Yasmine al-Massri, Jalal Altawil, Robert Aramayo, Saleh Bakri, Yafa Bakri, Karim Daoud Anaya, Billy Howle, Dhafer L'Abidine, Liam Cunningham, and Jeremy Irons.
