Türkiye has delivered modern air navigation equipment to Aleppo International Airport as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen aviation safety and improve operational efficiency at one of Syria’s key transport hubs.
Omar Al-Husri, director general of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, said on Sunday that the support reflects a significant step toward upgrading air traffic infrastructure in Aleppo, particularly as broader investment plans for the airport are underway.
In a post on his personal X account, Al-Husri expressed gratitude to Türkiye’s General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) for supplying Aleppo airport with advanced ground navigation systems.
The equipment includes the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Doppler VOR (DVOR), both considered essential tools for improving the safety and reliability of flight operations.
According to aviation officials, the ILS enables aircraft to carry out safe and accurate landings, particularly during adverse weather or reduced visibility.
Meanwhile, the DVOR provides highly precise navigational guidance within the airspace, supporting more efficient air traffic management and reducing operational risks.
Together, these systems represent a key upgrade in the airport’s technical capacity and compliance with international safety standards.
Specialized technical teams have begun preparatory and installation work for the newly delivered systems.
Al-Husri said the equipment will enter service once installation and calibration procedures are completed and the required technical certification is obtained.
He added that the upgrades are expected to have a positive impact on air traffic at Aleppo International Airport in the coming period.
The Turkish delivery comes shortly after the Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation signed an agreement with a Saudi investment consortium led by Bin Dawood Investment Group.
The agreement includes plans to develop a new Aleppo International Airport while also operating and improving the current airport during the development phase.
It also involves financing an integrated navigation radar system intended to cover Syria’s entire airspace.
The project is described as the first investment by the Eilaf Fund.
Saudi Arabia’s investment minister said the Kingdom will invest 7.5 billion riyals (about $2 billion) to develop two airports in Aleppo over several phases.
Aleppo Gov. Azzam Al-Gharib said the first phase will focus on upgrading existing facilities, including runways and passenger terminals.
In the second and third phases, a completely new airport will be constructed, with passenger capacity expected to reach 6 million annually in phase two and 12 million annually in phase three, alongside flexible plans for future expansion.
Al-Gharib also said the architectural design of the new airport will draw inspiration from Aleppo’s long history of development and civilization.
He described the project as a “new beginning” for the city, emphasizing that it could open wider prospects for economic growth and regional development.
