The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) will lead the restoration project of the Muhammad Iqbal Museum in Lahore as part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Punjab Archaeology Department of Pakistan on Tuesday.
The agreement, formalized in a ceremony attended by TIKA Islamabad Coordinator Saliha Tuna and Zaheer Abbas Malik, Director General of Punjab Archaeology, aims to preserve both the physical structure and intellectual legacy of Iqbal, ensuring that future generations can engage with his contributions to philosophy, poetry, and the cultural landscape of South Asia.
Allama Muhammad Iqbal is widely regarded as the national poet of Pakistan and a significant figure in the philosophical and cultural history of the region, and his work continues to shape thought and discourse in both countries.
The Muhammad Iqbal Museum, originally built by the renowned philosopher and poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, is a key cultural landmark in Lahore, Pakistan. Following Iqbal’s death, the building was transformed into a museum to honor his legacy.
TIKA will take responsibility for overseeing the restoration of the museum, with a completion target set for 2027, which will mark the 150th anniversary of Iqbal's birth.
The signing of the MoU took place during the "Türkiye-Pakistan Cultural Week," which celebrated the 102nd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Türkiye. The event underscored the longstanding friendship between the two countries, and the restoration of the Muhammad Iqbal Museum is seen as a key symbolic gesture in furthering this relationship, according to a statement from the TIKA.
Upon completion, the museum will be a testament to the shared cultural and intellectual legacy of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, providing visitors with an opportunity to explore his life and work in a restored setting, the TIKA said.
