Türkiye's Goreme and Guatemala's La Antigua Guatemala have signed a sister-city agreement aimed at strengthening cultural cooperation, promoting sustainable tourism and expanding ties between local governments in the two countries.
According to a statement from the Turkish Embassy in Guatemala, the agreement was signed during a simultaneous online ceremony held in both cities, bringing together mayors, ambassadors and senior diplomatic officials from Türkiye and Guatemala.
Both destinations are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites, with La Antigua Guatemala joining the list in 1979 and Goreme in 1985. The two cities share common goals in preserving historical and cultural heritage while developing sustainable tourism.
Antigua Mayor Juan Manuel Asturias emphasized the importance of exchanging expertise in cultural heritage management, tourism, environmental protection, education, science and technology.
Goreme Mayor Omer Eren said the partnership between Goreme, located in the heart of Türkiye's Cappadocia region, and La Antigua Guatemala would go beyond a formal agreement and open up new opportunities for cooperation in tourism, culture and local governance.
The sister-city arrangement, a formal partnership between municipalities in different countries, is intended to encourage long-term collaboration and the exchange of knowledge and experience.
Türkiye's Ambassador to Guatemala Beliz Celasin Rende described sister-city partnerships as important instruments of cultural diplomacy, noting their role in strengthening friendship between communities and expanding economic and cultural cooperation.
Guatemala's Ambassador to Türkiye Eduardo Hernandez Enrique Recinos expressed confidence that the agreement would deepen bilateral relations and lay the groundwork for broader cooperation in the future.
The signing ceremony also brought together Guatemala's Foreign Ministry Director of Cultural Affairs Maria Beatriz Gallardo, Türkiye's Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean Ambassador Mehmet Erkan Aytun, and Guatemala's Director General for Political Relations Ambassador Lynsay Hernandez Munoz.
The agreement is expected to strengthen relations between Türkiye and Guatemala while creating lasting opportunities for cooperation between their local administrations.
