An exhibition of 66 works by 33 Izmir artists is exploring the Turkish port city’s history, cultural richness and shared memory through painting.
Titled "Izmir’s Painters, Painters’ Izmir," the show was organized by the Izmir Development Agency (IZKA) to mark its 20th anniversary. It is part of the agency’s Memory Izmir project and is on display at the Mehmet Tuzum Kizilcan Art Gallery in Kulturpark.
After about a year of preparation, the exhibition opened to the public Oct. 14. It will remain open through Dec. 30.
The artists use a range of techniques and approaches.
They portray Izmir not only through its streets, squares, historic buildings and coastline, but also through the marks the city has left on their personal memories and the emotional ties they have formed with it.
The works shed light on different periods of the city’s past, its cultural layers and its everyday life, reflecting its multicultural character from a variety of perspectives.
Rather than offering a single narrative of the city, the exhibition presents a multivoiced portrait shaped by each artist’s personal experience.
Izmir has a history stretching back about 8,500 years.
The exhibition uses painting to bring that historical and cultural legacy into view, revisiting the city’s story from the past to the present through the artists’ interpretations.
The project is part of IZKA’s work on urban culture and the arts. It aims to preserve Izmir’s cultural memory and pass it on to future generations.
