Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata was staged at the Ataturk Cultural Center as part of the 17th International Istanbul Opera and Ballet Festival, bringing together artists from the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet and leading Azerbaijani performers.
The production was presented at the Turk Telekom Opera Hall inside the Ataturk Cultural Center, known locally as AKM, one of Istanbul's major cultural venues.
Organized by the General Directorate of State Opera and Ballet, known as DOB, the festival featured one of Verdi's most frequently performed operas, a work built around love, sacrifice and social pressure.
Artists from the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater also took part in the performance.
Conductor Eyyub Guliyev, soprano Inara Babayeva and tenor Ramil Qasimov, all recognized figures in Azerbaijan's classical music and opera scene, appeared on stage.
Inara Babayeva performed the role of Violetta Valery, while Mert Sungu played Alfredo Germont and Murat Guney portrayed Giorgio Germont.
Inspired by Alexandre Dumas fils' The Lady of the Camellias, La Traviata brings together Verdi's music and Francesco Maria Piave's libretto in a story that looks beyond romance.
The opera also holds up a critical mirror to the society of its period, questioning social taboos, roles assigned to women and the liberating force of love beneath the glittering surface of Parisian entertainment life.
The production was staged and dramaturged by Recep Ayyilmaz. Eyyub Guliyev conducted the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Orchestra, while Paolo Villa led the choir.
The choreography was prepared by Kursat Kilic, with set design by Cagda Citkaya, costume design by Gizem Betil and lighting design by Yakup Cartik.
La Traviata will be staged again this evening as part of the festival program.
