The historic Ani Archaeological Site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, has taken on a stark winter landscape as snow blankets its medieval structures and surrounding plains in eastern Türkiye. Located near the closed Türkiye-Armenia border, Ani stands out as a vast open-air museum where layers of history come together across centuries.

Under a clear night sky streaked with star trails, the stone ruins of Ani appear both fragile and monumental. Once a thriving medieval city, the site is known for its churches, chapels, city walls and monumental gates that still stand despite centuries of earthquakes and abandonment.

Among the most striking structures is a domed church that rises alone on the snowy steppe, its conical roof and arched windows clearly visible against the winter sky. Other partially ruined churches reveal detailed stonework, geometric decorations and arched entrances that reflect the architectural traditions of the medieval Caucasus and Anatolia.

Ani’s defensive architecture also stands out in winter conditions. A tall brick minaret and adjacent structures rise along a snow-covered path, while massive city walls and fortified gates remain largely intact. The fortifications once protected the city, which was a key settlement along historic trade routes.

The winter scenery not only transforms the visual character of Ani but also underscores its exposed location on a high plateau. Rolling hills covered in snow surround the site, reinforcing the sense of isolation that defines the area today.
