The Sabanci University Sakip Sabanci Museum (SSM) will host a major exhibition of legendary contemporary artist Yoko Ono starting June 25, 2026.

This comprehensive showcase titled "Yoko Ono: Insound and Instructure" marks one of the artist’s most significant displays in recent years.

Supported by Akbank, the exhibition brings together works from the 1960s to the present day.

The exhibition is a collaboration with MUSAC (Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Castilla y Leon) in Spain.

After its initial run in Leon, the collection travels to Türkiye to offer international and local audiences a deep dive into Ono’s multidisciplinary career.

Imagine a world of active participation

The core of the exhibition focuses on Ono’s philosophy of audience involvement.

Unlike traditional art displays where visitors remain passive observers, this retrospective requires mental and physical participation. Her work transforms the viewer into an active part of the creative process.

The exhibition covers a wide range of media, including:

  • Poetry and drawings
  • Photography and video
  • Sculpture and large-scale installations
  • Participatory works completed by the audience

Visitors can expect to see early career milestones that defined art history.

The exhibition features "Grapefruit," "Cut Piece," "Sky Ladders," and "Mend Piece." It also includes large-scale installations she developed from the 1990s onward.

Curators note that "Insound and Instructure" stands alongside the "Music of the Mind" exhibition shown at London's Tate Modern, Berlin's Gropius Bau, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

Together, these two exhibitions represent the most thorough explorations of Ono’s practice in the modern era.

Six-month chance for peace and art

The arrival of this exhibition highlights the commitment of the Sakip Sabanci Museum to international collaborations. By partnering with MUSAC, the museum continues to bring globally influential contemporary art to Istanbul.

The exhibition will remain open to the public for six months following its June opening.

Art enthusiasts and expatriates living in Türkiye can visit the Sakip Sabanci Museum to experience the legacy of one of the most influential figures in contemporary art.
