The ancient southeastern Turkish city of Mardin is set to reach a global audience through The Wanderer, a widely watched travel documentary series on Amazon Prime Video. The program, now streaming in 137 countries, highlights the region’s rich history, cultural legacy, and natural beauty.

Filmed with the support of Türkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), the Mardin episode focuses on sites in both the central Artuklu district and the historical town of Midyat. The project also received assistance from Mardin’s Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism.

Hosted by renowned experts in travel and history

The documentary features contributions from internationally known historian Bettany Hughes and travel presenter Alex Outhwaite. Their participation adds further weight to the series’ goal of promoting lesser-known destinations through engaging storytelling and on-location exploration.

With its characteristic stone architecture, centuries-old monasteries, and views over the Mesopotamian plains, Mardin presents a visually rich setting that aligns closely with the show’s mission to uncover the stories behind the world’s most fascinating destinations.

Building momentum in international tourism

The broadcast forms part of a broader effort to boost Mardin’s international profile. In recent months, a series of familiarization trips have brought tourism professionals from across Asia to the city. In May, a group of tour operators and travel agencies from Singapore and Malaysia visited the region through a collaboration between Turkish Airlines and the TGA. In June, a delegation from China followed suit, indicating growing interest from East Asian markets.

Authorities hope that the exposure generated by The Wanderer will strengthen Mardin’s position as a rising destination on the global tourism map, especially among viewers from Europe, the United States, and Asia.
