Antalya is preparing to switch schools to remote learning across seven districts on Nov. 11-12 as Türkiye gears up to host the COP31 United Nations climate summit, while female public employees with school-age children may also be granted administrative leave.

Antalya Governor Hulusi Sahin announced Monday that preparations for remote education had been completed, although discussions with the Ministry of National Education were still underway before a final decision.

The proposed measures would cover Antalya's five central districts, along with Serik and Manavgat, during the two-day period.

Remote schooling and administrative leave under consideration

Sahin said authorities were also working on arrangements to grant administrative leave to female public employees working in the affected areas whose children attend primary or secondary school.

Administrative leave would allow eligible employees to take authorized time off from their public-sector duties.

Officials are expected to clarify the arrangements in the coming days, with the final details still being worked out.

COP31 preparations move forward as Antalya expects international leaders

The announcement came during a press briefing at the COP31 venue, attended by Deputy Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Burak Demiralp and Governor Sahin.

Demiralp said representatives from 196 countries were expected to attend the U.N. climate conference, which will bring together heads of state and government, scientists, business leaders, young people and civil society organizations.

Around 90 heads of state and government are expected to participate, while officials anticipate approximately 1.5 million visitors throughout the event.

Following the briefing, journalists toured the conference site, where preparations were underway across the designated blue and green zones.

Antalya's EXPO site to remain in use after climate summit

Authorities also outlined plans to repurpose the EXPO grounds after COP31, turning the site into a venue for festivals, trade fairs and conferences.

Demiralp said government institutions, local authorities and private-sector organizations had been working together on preparations since Türkiye took on hosting responsibilities.

He added that the conference would bring countries together to address climate issues and discuss their shared future.
