Bolu emerged as the coldest province in Türkiye overnight, with the country’s three lowest temperatures all recorded within its districts, according to official meteorological data, as a sharp cold snap tightened its grip after snowfall cleared.
Across Türkiye, a wave of cold air pushed nighttime temperatures well below freezing, but the sharpest drop was felt in Bolu, a northwestern province known internationally for winter tourism and often described as the “Heart of Nature.”
As skies cleared following snowfall, the absence of cloud cover allowed heat to escape more rapidly, bringing on severe frost across the province. By night, subzero temperatures had set in across the city and surrounding rural areas, affecting daily life.
Data released by the Turkish State Meteorological Service through its Automatic Meteorological Observation Stations showed that the coldest location in the country was Abant Lake National Park, a protected natural area famous for its crater lake and forests. Thermometers there dropped to minus 21.3 °C (minus 6.3 °F).
This was followed by Samat village in the Gerede district, where temperatures fell to minus 19.4 °C (minus 2.9 °F), while the third coldest reading nationwide was registered in the Dortdivan district at minus 18.3 °C (minus 0.9 °F). With these measurements, Bolu occupied the top three places in the national coldest locations list.
As freezing conditions held on through the early morning hours, the cold made itself visible across Bolu. Car windows iced over, long icicles formed along rooftops, and the surfaces of lakes and ponds froze solid.
Residents struggled to start their vehicles in the morning, highlighting how the prolonged frost disrupted everyday routines as temperatures stayed below zero throughout the night.
