The Advisory Board for this fall's COP31 United Nations climate change conference held its first meeting online Tuesday, chaired by Türkiye's environment, urbanization and climate change minister, according to a ministry statement.
Murat Kurum, who also serves as COP31 president, used the session to lay out Türkiye's vision for the conference, calling for action to replace rhetoric and pointing to a 10-point COP31 Action Agenda alongside six global implementation goals, the ministry said.
Kurum briefed participants on diplomatic efforts carried out so far by the COP31 Presidency, saying negotiations would continue with the goal of holding a conference in November that "leaves no one behind."
Writing on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Kurum said the Advisory Board "will be one of our most important stakeholders throughout the COP31 process." He added that this year's conference is expected to draw experts from around the world, and that the board used the online meeting to outline preparations, vision and goals for the summit.
"We will not leave COP31 as merely a conference; through common wisdom, dialogue, consensus and action, we will make it a key to the global fight against climate change," he said.
According to the ministry statement, the Advisory Board was established as part of preparations for COP31, bringing together senior officials and experts working on climate change from around the world.
Türkiye is set to host COP31 in the southern city of Antalya from Nov. 9 to 20. The Conference of the Parties, or COP, is the annual decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, bringing together national governments, international organizations and civil society groups to negotiate global climate policy.
