Comedian and actor Russell Brand, 51, has been found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault against four women. A jury reached the unanimous verdict at Southwark Crown Court in London after a four-week trial.

The offences took place between 2004 and 2009. Brand was cleared of two counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault. He denied all charges during the trial and maintained that every sexual encounter was consensual.

Judge Joel Bennathan said Brand faces a substantial prison sentence and announced that the sentence will be handed down on Monday, Nov. 9. Brand’s lawyer Ian Winter requested bail so his client could spend time with his family. Bennathan rejected the request, citing the possibility that Brand would not attend the sentencing hearing. Brand remains in custody until then.

Prosecution and police statements

Prosecutors argued during the trial that Brand used his fame and influence to commit sexual offences against women. London’s Metropolitan Police said the verdict is significant given the courage and determination shown by the complainants.

The force also said it continues to investigate complaints from two further women who allege rape. Those allegations are not part of the current case.

Background

The investigation into Russell Brand began in September 2023 following a joint expose by Channel 4’s "Dispatches," The Sunday Times, and The Times, alongside additional coverage from Variety and Salon. Brand denied the allegations.

Prosecutors initially charged him in April 2025 before adding further charges that December. His trial opened on Oct. 12, 2026, culminating in his conviction on rape and sexual assault charges on Nov. 5, 2026.

Brand took the stand on Oct. 28 and told the court he was not guilty on every charge.

He rose to prominence in the early 2000s, hosting television programs and a BBC radio show, and now lives in Florida, United States.
