The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) has issued a warning for residents as severe winter weather is expected to affect the city until Tuesday morning.

According to the Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM), a combination of weather systems from the Central Mediterranean and the Balkans has brought intense rainfall to the region, which is forecast to intensify with storm conditions in the coming hours.

Temperatures drop, snow expected in western districts

Temperatures are expected to drop by 2–4 degrees Celsius, returning to typical winter levels. In western districts such as Silivri, Catalca, Arnavutkoy, Buyukcekmece and Basaksehir, precipitation may take the form of rain mixed with snow or localized snowfall.

Cold and wet conditions are expected to persist until Tuesday morning, with temperatures gradually rising to around 15°C by Wednesday.

The municipality has urged citizens to exercise caution against potential flooding, waterlogging, icy roads, frost, snowfall and transportation disruptions. Drivers and pedestrians are specifically advised to remain vigilant due to the risk of icy conditions on roads.

Storm-related incidents and rising dam levels

Since last night, the ongoing storm has resulted in 45 reported incidents, including 17 fallen trees or broken branches, 22 damaged signboards and advertising panels, two roof collapses, two fallen utility poles and two retaining wall failures. Municipality teams actively responded to these emergencies.

Also, meteorological data indicate that Istanbul has received 11 to 21 kilograms of rainfall per square meter since Sunday evening. Meanwhile, dam water levels have risen from approximately 18% on Jan. 1 to nearly 30% Monday, reflecting the significant precipitation.
