The Turkish Language Association (Turk Dil Kurumu, TDK) has announced “digital conscience” as the Word/Concept of the Year 2025, following a public voting process conducted in collaboration with Ankara University’s Communication Research and Application Center (ILAUM).
Approximately 300,000 citizens participated in the vote, selecting the concept that best reflects contemporary societal trends. Among the shortlisted nominees were:
TDK defines “digital conscience” as the tendency in the digital era for individuals to seek moral relief through social media interactions, such as likes, shares and comments, rather than engaging in concrete actions in real life.
The association notes that this phenomenon transforms conscience into a “clickable” activity, providing a symbolic rather than substantive engagement with ethical responsibilities.
The institution further highlighted that, in cases such as humanitarian crises in Gaza and East Turkestan, social media content consumption or creation can produce a sense of moral participation without tangible action.
This digitalized form of conscience, according to TDK, may reduce individual and societal accountability and hinder meaningful solutions.
