A dermatologist at Medicana International Istanbul Hospital says that symptoms such as itching, dryness, discoloration and rashes can be early signs of various medical conditions.
Prof. Dr. Omer Faruk Elmas explained that people often ignore skin changes, thinking they are temporary. However, sometimes these changes signal underlying skin conditions that need a specialist’s care.
He recommends seeing a doctor if you have ongoing itching, redness that won’t go away, sudden rashes, or flaking.
Elmas pointed out that skin diseases often start with small changes, and sensitivity can increase, especially when the seasons change.
Early signs may include dryness, scaling, increased sensitivity, and itching. Some people may also notice discoloration, blotching, or become more sensitive to sunlight.
Elmas explained that skin health depends on more than just genetics. Environmental factors are also important. Using the wrong cosmetic products, not moisturizing enough, a poor diet, and stress can all weaken the skin’s barrier.
He also warned that taking long, hot showers and using products that dry out the skin can make skin problems worse. He stressed the importance of using products that match your skin type.
Elmas noted that itching is one of the most common reasons people see a dermatologist. He explained that itching is usually a symptom of another problem, not a condition by itself.
Allergies, eczema, fungal infections or other diseases can all cause itching. If itching gets worse at night, is accompanied by widespread rashes, or lasts a long time, it should be checked by a doctor.
"Not ignoring changes in your skin and getting them checked early makes treatment easier and helps prevent bigger problems," Elmas said.
"With simple steps, good skin care, and seeing a specialist when needed, you can keep your skin healthy."
