The Eiffel Tower in Paris will close earlier than usual this weekend as extreme heat pushes temperatures up across France, according to a statement shared on the landmark's official website.
The change means the tower will shut its doors to visitors from 4 p.m. local time today and tomorrow. Under normal operations, the Eiffel Tower remains open until 12:45 a.m., making the early closure a major adjustment for visitors planning evening access.
Those planning to visit the historic monument this weekend will need to enter much earlier than usual, with the final admission set for 12:15 p.m. local time.
The decision was taken in response to the high temperatures expected in Paris and across the country, as authorities step up weather alerts during the heatwave.
France has issued a red alert in 24 departments and an orange alert in 59 others because of the extreme heat. In the French system, departments are local administrative areas, broadly similar to provinces or counties.
Temperatures in the country are expected to climb as high as 39 degrees Celsius during the day, prompting adjustments at one of Paris' most visited landmarks.
