An amateur fisherman caught a 25.6-kilogram amberjack to win the top prize at a two-day fishing tournament in Kumluca, a district on Türkiye's Mediterranean coast, organizers said.
The "Kumluca Fishing for the Big One" tournament, now in its third year, drew about 100 boats and 300 competitors, and was organized by the Kumluca Municipality and the Kumluca Sport Amateur Fishing Association (KUMSABDER) with sponsor support.
Emrah Aksoy, fishing from a boat named "Olimpos Fishing," won the largest-fish category with his 25.6-kilogram amberjack.
Aksoy said he had competed in the tournament for the past two years, narrowly missing a placement the previous year.
"We caught three fish last year but still did not place first. This year we caught the big one, and the win came our way," Aksoy said.
In the catch-and-release category, Ramazan Muslu, fishing from "Termalci Fishing," won first place with a 68-centimeter grouper that scored 366 points after being released back into the sea.
In the "most fish caught" category, Anil Keklik, fishing from "Baliklama," won first place with 70.8 points.
Winners received prizes provided by tournament sponsors. Kumluca Mayor Mesut Avcioglu said he was pleased with the strong turnout for the tournament's third edition.
KUMSABDER President and tournament organizer Erhan Aydogmus said the two-day event saw amateur anglers catch a range of fish species and that organizers are considering international competitions in future years.
