Former Türkiye international Nihat Kahveci was detained over allegations that he assaulted his wife during an argument at a restaurant in Istanbul, but was later released after giving a statement to prosecutors.
His wife, Fulya Sever Kahveci, publicly rejected the reports of violence before removing her social media statement shortly after it was posted.
Kahveci and his wife were reportedly dining at a restaurant in Istanbul's Sariyer district when an argument broke out between them for an unknown reason.
According to the allegations, the dispute escalated and Kahveci slapped his wife before throwing a bottle from the table.
Kahveci was taken into custody over the alleged assault and later presented before prosecutors. He was released after giving his statement.
His wife reportedly did not file a complaint, seek a medical report or provide a statement as part of the investigation.
Fulya Sever Kahveci responded to the allegations through her social media account, saying that she and Kahveci had been married since July 19, 2018, and had two children.
She said they had maintained their relationship, friendship and family life despite remaining in the public eye. While acknowledging that couples could disagree and argue, she rejected suggestions that the dispute had involved violence.
“Spouses may not always agree and may argue, but this will never create a situation in which my husband would use violence against me,” she said.
She also condemned the reports and said journalists could have contacted her before publishing them. The statement was removed from her account shortly after it was shared.
Kahveci, 46, came through Besiktas' youth system before moving to Real Sociedad in 2002. He scored 23 league goals during the 2002-03 season as the Spanish club finished second in La Liga.
The former forward later played for Villarreal and returned to Besiktas before retiring from professional football in 2012.
Kahveci made 69 appearances and scored 19 goals for Türkiye. He was part of the national team that finished third at the 2002 World Cup and scored twice during Türkiye's dramatic 3-2 comeback against the Czech Republic at Euro 2008. He currently works as a football commentator.
