Ankara is hosting an exceptional celebration of Islamic calligraphy as the inaugural International Islamic Arts Fair opens its doors at ATO Congressium.
Organised jointly by the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi), Türkiye Diyanet Foundation, and Yildiz Holding, the exhibition gathers together some of the most influential names in the art of Islamic calligraphy.
Esra Goncuglu, art consultant for Yildiz Holding, emphasized the artistic and historical value of the pieces on display.
"The exhibition presents 41 pieces by 24 distinguished calligraphers in a chronological narrative," Goncuglu told Anadolu Agency (AA). "Among the featured masters are Hattat Hafiz Osman Efendi, Sultan Mahmud II, and Sultan Ahmed III, whose works stand as pillars of the calligraphic tradition. Contemporary masters such as Mehmet Ozcay, Ali Toy, and Ferhat Kurlu are also represented, bridging classical heritage with modern refinement."
One of the most remarkable pieces is a calligraphy panel dating back to the 17th century, created by Hafiz Osman Efendi. The panel features a Hadith written in exquisite form: “Whoever honors a scholar, honors me.”
Another highlight is a work by Hattat Fehmi Efendi, featuring a watercolor illustration of the Rawdah al-Mutahharah (the Prophet Muhammad’s peace be upon him's sacred chamber in Medina) at its center. Surrounding it is an eloquent naat (a poem in praise of the Prophet), along with four instances of the Kalima al-Tawheed at the corners—a stunning blend of visual and spiritual artistry.
Curated to reflect the enduring elegance and continuity of Islamic art, the exhibition remains open to the public until May 11.
