What you eat after 45 could add years to your life, science says just a few diet changes may give you up to 3 extra years.
A new international study has found that adopting healthier dietary habits after the age of 45 can potentially add up to three years to a person’s life. Conducted in collaboration with the UK Biobank, the research was published in the journal Science Advances.
The study followed 103,649 participants over an average period of 10.6 years, during which 4,314 deaths were recorded. Researchers analyzed participants’ diets and their association with mortality and longevity, focusing on five established dietary patterns.
The diets examined included:
Participants who adhered closely to these dietary patterns experienced lower mortality rates and longer lifespans. Men gained the greatest benefit from the DRRD diet, while women benefited most from the Mediterranean-style diet (aMED).
The study found that men who adopted healthier eating patterns at age 45 could live 1.9 to 3 years longer, and women 1.5 to 2.3 years longer. Researchers emphasized that the positive impact of diet on lifespan appeared independent of genetic predisposition, highlighting the universal benefits of healthy eating.
