Researchers from Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University have discovered a previously unknown insect species in the Kaz Mountains (Ida), located on the border between Canakkale and Balikesir provinces. The study was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sahin Kok, Director of the university’s Biodiversity Application and Research Center.
The discovery occurred in the Guvercinkaya region during fieldwork focused on the area’s unique flora and fauna. The new species was found feeding on the plant Valeriana alliariifolia, which is native to the Kaz Mountains.
The species has been formally described in a scientific article published in Zootaxa, a leading international journal of animal taxonomy. It has been named Aphis dardanelliensis, in reference to the ancient name of the Canakkale Strait, “Dardanelles.”
In a statement, the research team emphasized that the finding highlights the rich biodiversity of the Kaz Mountains and the potential for further discoveries.
