Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected across much of Türkiye from Saturday, with Istanbul facing intermittent rainfall throughout the coming week as authorities warn of potential flooding and disruptions to transportation.
According to the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), showers will spread across the Aegean, Mediterranean, Black Sea and parts of central, eastern and southeastern Türkiye, while temperatures will generally remain close to seasonal averages.
In Istanbul, the city's Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM), which monitors weather-related emergencies, expects rainfall to pick up from Sunday evening and continue through the first week of November.
AKOM forecasts partly to mostly cloudy skies across Istanbul on Saturday, with occasional local showers and temperatures ranging from 13°C (55°F) to 16°C.
Similar conditions are expected on Sunday. Rainfall is forecast to intensify in the evening as temperatures climb to between 14°C and 18°C.
The unsettled weather will carry over into Monday and Tuesday, when widespread showers are expected to move across the city under mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures are forecast to gradually rise into the 15°C-20°C range.
Rainy and heavily overcast conditions are then expected to persist on Wednesday and Thursday, extending the wet spell into the second half of the week.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious about possible flooding and transportation disruptions as the rainfall continues.
The Aegean region is expected to experience widespread showers and thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon.
Izmir will see light showers with a high of 21°C, while Mugla is forecast to experience heavier showers and thunderstorms, with temperatures reaching 18°C. Denizli and Afyonkarahisar will also see afternoon rainfall, with highs of 20°C and 16°C, respectively.
Along the Mediterranean coast, Antalya and Adana are expected to experience intermittent showers and thunderstorms, with temperatures climbing to 22°C and 23°C. Rain is also expected in Burdur and coastal parts of Hatay.
In the Marmara region, Canakkale is forecast to receive showers overnight, while Bursa and Kirklareli will remain mostly cloudy. Mist and isolated fog could develop across the region during the morning and nighttime hours.
Rainfall is also expected across the western and central Black Sea regions, as well as the eastern Black Sea coastline.
Bolu, Duzce, Kastamonu and Zonguldak are forecast to experience intermittent showers and thunderstorms, with daytime highs ranging from 14°C to 16°C.
Further east, Rize will reach 20°C, while Trabzon and Samsun are expected to record highs of 18°C, with showers and thunderstorms continuing at intervals.
In central Türkiye, Ankara and Eskisehir will experience occasional showers, with highs of 16°C, while Konya and Nevsehir are expected to remain mostly cloudy.
Rainfall will also affect parts of eastern and southeastern Türkiye, including Malatya, where afternoon thunderstorms are forecast, and Sanliurfa, where intermittent showers could develop from the morning onward.
Temperatures across most of the country are expected to remain near seasonal norms, although northern and eastern areas could run 2°C-4°C above average.
The latest forecast comes as heavy rainfall has already caused flooding in the Black Sea province of Rize, where an overflowing stream cut off access to three neighborhoods in the Madenli town of Cayeli district.
The flooding occurred after drainage culverts became blocked during intense rainfall, sending water onto a road connecting the neighborhoods. Small landslides also developed in higher parts of the town, while several roads sustained damage.
Gendarmerie officers, State Hydraulic Works (DSI) personnel and municipal teams moved into the affected areas with construction equipment to clear debris and restore access.
Madenli Mayor Mustafa Caliskan said the immediate danger had passed and traffic had resumed under controlled conditions, although repairs were still needed.
"Following the heavy rainfall, a blocked culvert caused the stream to flow onto the road connecting three neighborhoods. The problem has now been resolved," Caliskan said.
He added that municipal teams were responding to reports of landslides at one or two locations and would assess the damaged road in daylight before restoring normal access.
Work in the affected area was continuing.
