The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) held a “Winter Preparedness and Evaluation Meeting” at their Eyupsultan headquarters in Istanbul, providing an overview of the city’s readiness for the upcoming winter season.
During the meeting, Ergun Cebeci, Head of the Department of Disaster Affairs and Risk Management, shared long-term weather forecasts for Istanbul. According to Cebeci, precipitation in December is expected to remain within seasonal norms, while temperatures will drop to typical winter levels in the last week of the month.
The period with the highest likelihood of snow is projected to occur between early January and mid-February. March is expected to be relatively mild and rainy, with a reduced chance of snowfall.
During the meeting, Ergun Cebeci, presented detailed forecasts for Istanbul’s upcoming winter:
Cebeci emphasized that early preparation is essential, as sudden temperature drops or intense snow events could impact transportation and city services.
Meteorological forecasts indicate that Türkiye’s eastern regions, including Erzurum, Kars, Agri, Bingol, Tunceli, Ardahan, Bayburt and Erzincan, have already experienced early snowfall, with high-altitude areas covered in white.
Authorities in these regions are actively clearing roads and assisting residents to minimize disruptions. Reports indicate that snow has temporarily affected transportation in mountain passes and high-altitude villages, while city centers continue monitoring road and pedestrian safety.
